PSYCHIATRIST

I am Dr Nokukhanya Phungula. I’m a Specialist Psychiatrist based at Evexia Psychiatric Day Hospital (Menlyn and Midstream) and Bryanwood Therapy and Assessment Centre. Beyond managing a wide range of mental illnesses, I am interested in the individual. Thus, I invest time getting to know my patients well to be able to assist them holistically, tailoring the treatment plan to their specific needs.

Often, the causes of psychiatric disorders are multi factorial. Thus, I always strive to use a bio- psycho-social approach utilising the expertise of other mental health care practitioners such as psychologists, social workers and occupational therapists.

I find joy in providing a safe, warm and supportive space for my patients and their families. Helping people navigate living with a mental illness and improving their quality of life, is my goal. Moreover, I pay great attention to the importance of equipping and empowering my patients’ support system on how to best support them.

My interests are Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Substance Use disorders, Adult ADHD, Eating disorders, OCD, Psychotic disorders such as Schizophrenia and Maternal Mental Health.
