adolescent program
Raising a teenager can be challenging, walking the journey alone can be scary. The Evexia adolescent program is offered to adolescents from ages 12 and older. We focus on helping our adolescent patients understand and deal with their daily challenges.
Our parent support group sessions offer a platform for parents to express their challenges, fears and through support from other parents find solutions and better ways of handling certain situations.
Evexia’s adolescent program is for everyone and anybody from all walks of life, from 12 to 18 who are not feeling well. At Evexia we strive to provide optimal care for our adolescents and our program is designed to provide consistency, containment and safety for them. Although we provide intervention for adults as well, we have structured the program in a way that the adolescents have limited to no contact with adult patients to minimize any risks.
Evexia’s Administration:
- The multi-disciplinary team consists of psychologists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, registered nurses, social workers, dietitians, and trauma facilitators.
- The programme consists of a minimal of two weeks of admission. Thereafter follow up intervention will take place individually or in a group setting.
- Evexia is covered by in Hospital Medical Scheme benefits.
- The program runs every weekday from 07h30 to 16h00.
- Adolescents should be picked up at reception after the day’s program. They will not be allowed to walk out of the facility without supervision. Please see that the adolescent is dropped off at reception safely under the provision of Evexia staff. Please inform staff if you arranged with someone unfamiliar to collect them. We will not release the adolescent if we are unfamiliar with the person collecting them.
- The parent or/and caregiver to please give information on dietary requirements of the adolescent prior to admission.
- Evexia is not an overnight facility, nor an emergency facility.
The program consists of the following components:
- Psycho-education group facilitated by a psychiatrist.
- Wellness and life skills groups facilitated by occupational therapists, social workers and dieticians.
- Psychiatric evaluation by a psychiatrist.
- Psychotherapy groups facilitated by a psychologist.
- The multidisciplinary team collaborates throughout the treatment / intervention process so that we can offer your adolescent the best holistic care.
- At the end of each week at Evexia, one or more of the following options will be recommended to you:
- Re-admission to Evexia for an additional week.
- Additional referral.
- Continuation of parent support groups.
- Family therapy.
- Parents and/or caregivers referred for therapy if needed.
We aim to perform the admission and all assessments prior to Monday that the adolescent first attends Evexia to provide optimal care and goal directed treatment. This is followed by an multi-disciplinary team meeting to decide if Evexia’s standard group program is suitable for your child or if we should adapt a program for them; or refer your child to a different facility.
Evexia offers a therapeutic intervention program for adolescents and their parents.
Evexia is aware that adolescents do not live in isolation but form part of the family system. Thus we think it is important to offer intervention to the family system as well as the adolescent, so as to be able to address the holistic well-being of the child.
Evexia provides support for parents in the form of parent support groups that are run while the adolescent is admitted and thereafter if applicable. These support groups are not parent training sessions, but we will focus on the presenting problems of the parents in a therapeutic way. The topics of the therapeutic groups will be determined by the difficulties with parent and adolescent relationships. It may include topics like setting appropriate boundaries, communicating effectively, and facilitating healthy relationships between yourself and your adolescent.
All parents or caregivers to attend the parent support groups for the duration of hospitalisation of the adolescent as well if further involvement in the support group if recommended by the multidisciplinary team after the hospitalisation.
All parents or caregivers to attend a family feedback session for thirty minutes while the patient is admitted at Evexia; depending on the appointment made by Evexia staff.
We ask parents not to allow their adolescents to participate in social interactions (eg. partying, drug use, alcohol use etc.) while hospitalised but that the time of hospitalisation is rather used to connect with adolescents as much as possible to facilitate healthy relationships. We expect the parents to support Evexia in this regard.
NB:
Evexia requires the involvement of the parents or/and caregivers in the process of the recovery of the adolescents. Limited involvement from the parents or/and caregivers may lead to discharge of the adolescent.
No smoking, alcohol use or drug use will be allowed on the premises of Evexia for patients under the age of 18 years. This illegal behaviour will lead to immediate discharge.
No drinks from home will be allowed. No consumption of energy drinks is allowed. There are beverages available at the hospital.
Participation in recommended treatment by the multidisciplinary team.
All group members are expected to maintain the confidentiality of other group members.
No romantic relationships to form between group members.
support & treatment
At Evexia we aim to help everyone to ‘BE’, rather than to behave and achieve.
We want to help you figure out what you want, what you feel, what you need and what you think, and to not live your life pleasing others. This takes time, which is why we run our programs the way we do.
We have specially designed group psychotherapy programs that run from Mondays to Fridays, between 07:30 and 16:00.
